Ferrying St.Peter to our shores!

Today I'm posting more than one photo so I can show you a part of our feast celebrations which I think is a bit unusual.
It has become a habit by both clubs to bring in the statue of St.Peter by boat to the shore and some boat owners follow the main boat as sort of a parade, waving flags, ballons and sounding horns. This particular club (we'll call it the red club) even had a band on a barge to accompany them.
The last two photos are of the statue being lifted to shore and the procession afterwards.
I must admit that I'm neither a follower of the red club nor of the green one but I go to both of their functions depending on when it's practical for me to go, so yesterday we were part of this boat parade on our boat.
I'll be posting fireworks photos tomorrow, as the display is tonight.

Traditions are unique around the globe. I had no idea your tradition happened until I saw it today.

Is this the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet?
I have seen it in Newfoundland, Canada, and also at Provincetown on Cape Cod in USA.

Quite nice pics! Amazing to see St. Peter on the water. In Montijo, a small town near Lisbon, on the other side of the River Tagus, there is also a procession on St. Peter's Day - June 29 - that brings the image to the river; it's a tradition coming from Middle Age...
Look forward to seeing the fireworks!

Hello! Thanks for visting my blog. Your pics are lovely. I went to Malta in 1996 and sailed round the Blue Grotto caves. It was brilliant. The colour of the water was fantastic. I should try to upload the pics I have, but I only have a few and I'd have to scan them in which is never as good a result.

I've also been to Valetta. I was a lot younger though so didn't apreciate some of the history/architecture like I would do now.

I'll come back soon.

Take care :0)

Great photos of the feast.

I was told and I believe this is correct. The Parish has 2 statutes of St Peter. The one that is taken on the boat from St Georges Bay to Pretty Bay Birzebbuga is the No 2 statute. They do not risk taking the original No 1 statute of St Peter on the boat. It makes sense cause anything can happen on a boat especially when many excited people are about.

I stand to be corrected but this is what I've been told.

Intersting photos. It is great to learn about festivals in other places. I'd never heard of St. Peter's procession before, but it looks like a wonderful tradition.
